How Can My Membership Help?
Established in 1987, the Friends of Rookery Bay is a volunteer support organization that assists the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve meet its goals.
Over the past five years declining state and federal revenues have threatened to eliminate some of the Reserve's monitoring and education programs.
The Friends of Rookery Bay helps Reserve staff address many challenges in managing our coastal lands and waters. They generate community involvement through an active volunteer program, outreach efforts, and fund-raising events that provide crucial financial support.
Some Important Facts
- The Environmental Learning Center is a field trip site for Collier County fourth grade classes and many other students.
- The Center features aquariums, interactive exhibits, a nature trail with observation platforms over water, guided kayak trips, an art gallery, special events, gift shop and more.
- More than 100,000 people enjoy the Reserve annually for recreational purposes such as boating, fishing and bird watching.
- Reserve scientists monitor water quality and animal populations, restore sea grass beds, conduct prescribed fires to safeguard habitat, protect nesting sea turtles and birds, educate the public and other users of the Reserve regarding land management best practices, and provide other important research and data to help promote informed decisions in the community.
